Summary

Every Texas county, shaded by the ACS unemployment rate (unemployed civilians as a share of the civilian labor force). Darker counties have higher unemployment. County borders are the U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundary (cb_500k).

Texas has 14.1 million civilians at work and 766,000 looking for a job, which is an unemployment rate of 5.1 per cent in the civilian labor force. That statewide figure is pulled by the large metros. In a typical Texas county the unemployment rate is 4.5 per cent, a little below the state, and only 58 per cent of people 16 and over are in the labor force, against 65 per cent statewide. Harris County alone has 2.3 million employed civilians, 16 per cent of everyone working in Texas. The highest county unemployment rates sit in small places: Menard at 14.4 per cent and Jasper at 14.0. Nine thinly populated counties report no unemployed people at all, a small-sample ACS estimate rather than a claim that nobody there is looking for work.

Summary

Every county, ranked by the share of people 16 and over who are in the labor force. Dallam leads at 77.5 per cent, a Panhandle county with a small population and a large share of people on the job. Travis, Denton, Williamson, Collin, Midland and Rockwall all clear 70 per cent: the Austin and Dallas suburban rings, plus the Permian Basin. Real County is lowest at 33.3 per cent. The median county sits at 58.1 per cent. Statewide the rate is 65.3 per cent, because the large metros have more people in the labor force. Seven counties reach 70 per cent and 36 fall below 50 per cent.

Unemployment against labor force participationEach point is one county. Unemployment and labor force participation are only weakly related: the correlation coefficient is -0.17. Counties where fewer people are in the labor force are not, as a rule, the ones with higher unemployment. Hudspeth pairs 12.0 per cent unemployment with 36.7 per cent participation. Dallam pairs 1.4 per cent unemployment with 77.5 per cent in the labor force. Summary

The full dataset: all 254 counties with population 16 and over, labor force, employed and unemployed civilians, Armed Forces, people not in the labor force, the unemployment rate and labor force participation, sorted by employed civilians and re-sortable on any column. Use the filter box to jump straight to a county by name. The unemployment rate is unemployed civilians divided by the civilian labor force for that county. County rates cannot be averaged into a state figure; that would weight Loving County the same as Harris. Nine counties report zero unemployed, ACS estimates in very small labor forces.

About this data

  • The unemployment rate is unemployed civilians divided by the civilian labor force, the ACS definition. People in the Armed Forces count in the labor force total but not in the unemployment rate.
  • A county rate describes that county's own labor market. County rates cannot be averaged to produce a state figure. The statewide unemployment rate is 5.1 per cent because it weights people equally; the typical county is 4.5 per cent.
  • Nine counties report zero unemployed people (Briscoe, Donley, Edwards, Jeff Davis, Kenedy, King, Loving, McMullen and Terrell). Those are ACS estimates in very small civilian labor forces (Kenedy has 25 people in the civilian labor force) and should be read as too few to measure, not as full employment.
  • Labor force participation is people 16 and over who are employed, unemployed or in the Armed Forces, divided by everyone 16 and over.
