Figure 1
Cash public assistance share, Texas counties

Cash public assistance share by Texas county · all 254 counties · hover or tap a county for every figure on this page
Every Texas county, shaded by the share of households that received cash public assistance income in the past 12 months. Darker counties have a higher share. County borders are the U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundary (cb_500k).
In a typical Texas county, 1.6 per cent of households received cash public assistance income in the past 12 months. That midpoint sits a little below the statewide share of 2.0 per cent, or 215,664 of 10,747,240 households. Averaging the 254 county rates instead gives 1.7 per cent. Cash aid is far rarer than SNAP: the highest shares are in small counties, led by Kenedy at 11.8 per cent, then Jim Hogg at 7.9 per cent and Nolan at 7.3 per cent. Eight counties reach 5 per cent or more, and 62 fall below 1 per cent. Seventeen counties reported none. Counts run a different way from rates. Harris, Dallas, Bexar, Tarrant and Travis together hold 48.8 per cent of households with cash public assistance, even though none of those five ranks among the highest shares.
Cash public assistance share · all 254 · ranked high to low
The complete ranking, nothing left out. Kenedy leads at 11.8 per cent, then Jim Hogg at 7.9 per cent and Nolan at 7.3 per cent. Eight counties reach 5 per cent or more. The middle county sits at 1.6 per cent. Sixty-two counties fall below 1 per cent. Williamson, at 1.1 per cent, is the lowest among counties with at least 200,000 households. Seventeen counties published zero households with cash public assistance. Top to bottom spans from nearly one in eight households down to none.
Households with cash public assistance · all 254 · ranked high to low
Every county the Census published, all 254, ranked by households with cash public assistance income. Harris is first at 40,340 households (2.3 per cent of households there), then Dallas at 20,968 and Bexar at 18,848. The five largest, adding Tarrant and Travis, hold 48.8 per cent of those households in Texas. A high count does not mean a high share: Harris ranks first by count and near the middle by share.
Households with cash public assistance against cash public assistance share · one point per row, 254 of 254 plotted
Each point is one Texas county. The horizontal axis is the cash public assistance household share; the vertical axis is the household count. The two barely move together (correlation 0.08), so a high rate does not mean a large caseload. Kenedy sits far to the right with only 2 households receiving cash aid. Harris sits high with 40,340 households and a middling 2.3 per cent share.
254 rows · 5 columns · sorted by cash public assistance share, high to low
The full dataset: all 254 counties with household counts, households with cash public assistance income, the cash-aid share, and households without. Sorted by cash-aid share and re-sortable on any column. Use the filter box to jump to a county by name. The share is that county's cash-aid households divided by its households; the column cannot be averaged into a state figure, because that would weight Loving County the same as Harris.
