Figure 1
Retirement income share, Texas counties

Retirement income share by Texas county · all 254 counties · hover or tap a county for every figure on this page
Every Texas county, shaded by the share of households that received retirement income in the past 12 months. Darker counties have a higher share. County borders are the U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundary (cb_500k).
In a typical Texas county, 22.1 per cent of households received retirement income in the past 12 months. That midpoint sits above the statewide share of 19.2 per cent, or 2,061,739 of 10,747,240 households, because large urban counties pull the state rate down. Averaging the 254 county rates instead gives 22.9 per cent. Loving County leads at 61.1 per cent, though only 22 of its households reported retirement income; among larger places, Sabine (41.2 per cent) and Lampasas (40.5 per cent) sit near the top. 164 counties reach 20 per cent or more, and only 3 fall below 10 per cent. Culberson is lowest at 7.1 per cent. Counts run a different way from rates: Harris, Bexar, Dallas, Tarrant and Travis together hold 39.3 per cent of households with retirement income. This is retirement income, not Social Security.
Retirement income share · all 254 · ranked high to low
The complete ranking by share of households with retirement income, nothing left out. Loving leads at 61.1 per cent on a very small base, then Terrell, Kent, Sabine and Lampasas. The middle county sits at 22.1 per cent. 164 counties reach 20 per cent or more and 3 fall below 10 per cent. Culberson trails at 7.1 per cent. Large metros sit lower on the share ranking even though they hold most of the households.
Households with retirement income · all 254 · ranked high to low
The complete ranking by count. Harris, Bexar, Dallas, Tarrant and Travis together account for 39.3 per cent of Texas households with retirement income. Harris alone has 270,053 such households. Counts concentrate in the metros; shares concentrate in smaller and older counties.
Households with retirement income against retirement income share · one point per row, 254 of 254 plotted
Each point is a Texas county. High shares often sit on small counts, while the large metros cluster lower on the share axis with the biggest household totals. That is why the typical county share (22.1 per cent) sits above the statewide household-weighted share (19.2 per cent).
