Figure 1
Mean travel time, Texas counties

Mean travel time (minutes) by Texas county · 252 of 254 counties with a published figure · hover or tap a county for every figure on this page
Every Texas county, shaded by mean travel time to work in minutes. Darker counties have longer commutes. County borders are the U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundary (cb_500k). Kenedy and Loving have no published mean.
In a typical Texas county the mean trip to work is 24.3 minutes, the midpoint of the 252 county means the Census published. That is not a Texas figure. A county mean is the average commute inside one county, and averaging those numbers would treat a handful of ranch-county workers the same as Harris. Count every commuter once and Texas sits at 26.7 minutes, pulled up by Houston, Dallas and the suburban counties around them. Bandera is the longest at 40.4 minutes, Presidio the shortest at 9.7. Forty-eight counties average 30 minutes or more. One in twelve Texas commuters, 8.2 percent, spends at least an hour getting to work, and in San Jacinto County that share is 27.3 percent.
Mean travel time (minutes) · all 252 with a published figure, of 254 · ranked high to low
The complete ranking of the 252 counties with a published mean, nothing left out. Bandera leads at 40.4 minutes, then Rains at 39.9 and San Jacinto at 39.1, Hill Country and exurban counties where many people drive into a larger job market. Eleven counties average 35 minutes or more. The twenty-fifth county, Marion, is 31.8 minutes, and the fiftieth, Live Oak, is 29.8. The middle county sits at 24.3 minutes. Fourteen counties average under 15 minutes, and Presidio is last at 9.7. Kenedy and Loving are omitted because the Census suppressed their aggregate travel time.
Share 60 minutes or more · all 254 · ranked high to low
Share of commuters whose trip is 60 minutes or longer, all 254 counties. Kenedy leads at 29.2 percent, but that is 7 of 24 commuters, so the share can move a long way on a handful of people. Among counties with a more stable base, San Jacinto is 27.3 percent, Crockett 26.7 and Bandera 26.7. Fourteen counties are at 20 percent or higher. The twenty-fifth county, Polk, is 17.1 percent. The middle county sits at 8.5 percent, close to the statewide 8.2 percent. Loving and Borden publish none.
Share 60 minutes or more against mean travel time (minutes) · one point per row, 252 of 254 plotted
Each point is one county with a published mean, 252 of the 254. Counties with longer average trips also tend to send a larger share of people on hour-plus drives: the correlation is 0.79. The relationship is not a straight line. Fort Bend averages 33.0 minutes with 12.0 percent riding an hour or more, while some smaller counties pair a high hour-plus share with a lower mean because a cluster of very short trips pulls the average down. Kenedy and Loving are omitted because they have no published mean.
254 rows · 6 columns · sorted by mean travel time (minutes), high to low
The full dataset: all 254 counties with mean travel time, the share of commuters under 15 minutes, 30 minutes or more, and 60 minutes or more, and the number of workers who commute, sorted by mean travel time and re-sortable on any column. Use the filter box to jump straight to a county by name. The Census suppressed the mean for Kenedy and Loving; those cells show an em dash rather than a zero. A county mean is not a state figure; averaging the 252 published means would weight Loving County the same as Harris.
