Figure 1
Social Security household share, Texas counties

Social Security share by Texas county · all 254 counties · hover or tap a county for every figure on this page
Every Texas county, shaded by the share of households that received Social Security income in the past 12 months. Darker counties have a higher share. County borders are the U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundary (cb_500k).
In a typical Texas county, 35.4 per cent of households received Social Security income in the past 12 months, the midpoint of the 254 county shares. That is well above the statewide 25.3 per cent, or 2,720,364 of 10,747,240 households, because large metro counties pull the state figure down: Travis sits at 17.1 per cent among the lowest, and Harris, Dallas, Bexar, Tarrant and Travis together hold 38.2 per cent of Social Security households even though none ranks near the top by share. Averaging the county rates instead gives 36 per cent. 77 counties reach 40 per cent or more, led by tiny Kenedy at 94.1 per cent, and only 7 fall below 20 per cent. This is Social Security income (table B19055), not retirement income generally and not SSI.
Social Security share · all 254 · ranked high to low
The complete ranking, nothing left out. Kenedy leads at 94.1 per cent, then Loving at 86.1 per cent and Real at 70 per cent, a cluster of small rural counties. 77 counties reach 40 per cent or more and 188 reach 30 per cent. The middle county sits at 35.4 per cent. Only 7 counties fall below 20 per cent; Martin is lowest at 16.8 per cent. Top to bottom spans from more than nine in ten households down to under one in five.
With Social Security · all 254 · ranked high to low
Every county the Census published, all 254, ranked by the number of households with Social Security income. Harris is first at 371,694 households, then Dallas at 203,927 and Bexar at 191,804. The five largest , Harris, Dallas, Bexar, Tarrant, Travis , hold 38.2 per cent of Social Security households in Texas. High counts and high shares are not the same list: the largest metros sit near the bottom of the share ranking.
With Social Security against social Security share · one point per row, 254 of 254 plotted
Each point is one Texas county. The horizontal axis is the Social Security household share; the vertical axis is the household count. The two move opposite each other (correlation -0.3), so a high rate does not mean a large caseload. Small rural counties sit far to the right with a few hundred Social Security households. Harris sits high with hundreds of thousands of Social Security households and a middling share near the state figure.
254 rows · 5 columns · sorted by social Security share, high to low
The full dataset: all 254 counties with household counts, households with Social Security income, the Social Security share, and households without Social Security. Sorted by Social Security share and re-sortable on any column. Use the filter box to jump to a county by name. The share is that county's Social Security households divided by its households; the column cannot be averaged into a state figure, because that would weight Loving County the same as Harris.
