Summary

Every Texas county shaded by the share of grandparents living with their own grandchildren under 18 who are responsible for those children. Darker counties have a higher responsibility share. County borders are the U.S. Census Bureau cartographic boundary (cb_500k). Six counties with no coresident grandparents are unshaded.

Across Texas, 729,192 grandparents age 30 and over live with their own grandchildren under 18, and 243,600 of them (33.4 per cent) are responsible for those children, according to the 2023 ACS five-year estimates. A typical Texas county sits higher: the midpoint county share is 44.4 per cent, because the big metro counties that hold most coresident grandparents have lower responsibility rates. In 95 counties, at least half of coresident grandparents are the ones raising the grandchildren. Six tiny counties report no grandparents living with grandchildren under 18.

About this data

Universe is the population 30 years and over (ACS table B10050). "Living with" means grandparents who live with their own grandchildren under 18. "Responsible" means those coresident grandparents who are responsible for the grandchildren.
The share responsible is responsible ÷ living with, rounded to one decimal (ordinary half-up) for each county before ranking or taking the typical-county midpoint. With 248 counties that have a rate, the midpoint is the mean of the two middle rounded values (44.1 and 44.7 per cent).
Statewide figures come from a separate ACS request for Texas (state:48), not from averaging county rates. County counts sum to the state totals for living with and responsible.
Six counties (King, Glasscock, Mason, Jeff Davis, Roberts, Loving) report zero grandparents living with grandchildren under 18. Their share is shown as an em dash; they stay in the table and count rankings.
